A Real 10 Minute Quilt Block!

SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE VIDEO 10 Minute Block

Start with 10 Squares of equal size.

4 of your squares will be dark and one square will be light or 4 will be light and one will be dark.

As long as the single square is contrasting to the other 4 it works.

This technique makes a very simple Cathedral Window.

After you’ve sewn the squares together as shown in the Video you get to decide how you want to treat the center Square.

It can be made into a Cathedral window by pulling in the side edges of the center square on the bias in towards the center.  Top stitch close to the Edge and your block is complete.

Immediately Below this Video on the Next Page you can watch Suzanne McNeill & on the following page you see her with her 5 minute Block.

I tried watching this video also. Instructor needs to lose all the jewelry as it is very distracting. Plus camera did not follow her movements smoothly. I would rather have it as a pattern rather than a video. That way I can take my time checking it out.

I’m sorry but that is a foolish comment. How can it not be a quilt? Shouldn’t matter how it’s put together, by hand or machine. You’re sewing the pieces together to result in a quilt. If you check a dictionary it says layers & pieces of fabric sewn together to make a cover. Doesn’t say ‘By Hand’.

You should give credit to the designer of this block. Her name is Suzanne McNeill. She has several books and videos.

Julie, I made two bow tie quilts using this technique when I lived in Va Beach but I believe that I started with 5 inch squares and two squares were background and two matched the piece in the middle.

I would have liked to see how she finished off the fold of the cathedral window. By hand or machine?

      Hi Joeanne,
Great question! If you decide to use a machine think about using an edge/joining foot to help you sew a perfect seam at the edge of each fold. This helps keep every seam the same. If You add a little glue to hold the fold in place before pressing the fold that may also help with either machine or hand sewing.
      Thanks for question!

What comment? When she said quilt? Then corrected it to the top of the quilt? There is a distinction. A quilt is a finished product. The top is only a part of that product.
Many people denegrate machine quilting saying it is not authentic – both machine and hand pieced are still quilts. I am still working up the nerve to try machine piecing again. My last effort was a botched up mess.

This method looks even better when you use smaller squares. A small piece of fabric in the center under the part you turn down will give it a true cathedral window effect.

I’m sorry, but this block reminds me of convenience food. Yes, the block is quick, but it wastes fabric in the name of speed and it looks like it was made in a hurry. It’s like convenience food – everything is right there, but the quality isn’t as good and you pay more for something that in the long run would be better if you “made from scratch”. I know it’s not easy to learn the skills to make a square in a square perfectly, but it’s like anything else – a little practice will gain you tremendous skill. (Isn’t that the same with cooking “real” food?)

I get tired of all these “quick” quilt blocks for beginners. Why isn’t there a really difficult block for those of us who want a challenge and not in 10 minutes? There needs to be more balance.

Not a ten minute block! It’s a silly come-on. Don’t like the floppy look and who’s in that big a hurry, anyway? Quilting is a marathon, not a sprint!

sorry but this is not a 10 minute quilt. why because you have to cut all the pieces, then sew them together and fold the middle it took me about 4 to 5 hrs. and i been quilting since 1991. Will maybe if some else did all the cutting for you.

Every quilter has their own speed. I;ve attended classes where some machines were whirling block out and some were like turtles so slow. It just depends on how experienced you are with your machine and have worked with it to see exactly what it will do. Good looking block.

What a bunch of hateful, rude, but-picky comments. If you don’t like the block or the tutorial just move on and find one that you do like. Don’t trash someone else’s hard work and effort. Normally Quilters are the nicest people you would meet but they don’t seem to be on this thread.

A banana tree will hold your big spool of thread while you sew. May have to put a hook in it so thread comes off even.

This block is quick as it says but, when quilting, you have to deal with all those edges that aren’t stitched down. You can top stitch them down before assembling the top of course. Also, the sewing lady should drop the cone into a large mug to keep it under control if she doesn’t have a cone holder.

I read a lot of comments then watched the video. First, great going showing this done with a layer cake, no cutting! I’ve seen this done using charms. True the person holding the device needs more practice but I don think this was intended to be a professional video I believe it was meant to help some find a way of making cathedral Windows pattern easier.

Why does everything have to be about speed? I realize some people don’t have much time, but this world runs too fast. Sometimes we just need to slow down and enjoy the step by step process.
