4 of your squares will be dark and one square will be light or 4 will be light and one will be dark.
As long as the single square is contrasting to the other 4 it works.
This technique makes a very simple Cathedral Window.
After you’ve sewn the squares together as shown in the Video you get to decide how you want to treat the center Square.
It can be made into a Cathedral window by pulling in the side edges of the center square on the bias in towards the center. Top stitch close to the Edge and your block is complete.
Immediately Below this Video on the Next Page you can watch Suzanne McNeill & on the following page you see her with her 5 minute Block.
I tried watching this video also. Instructor needs to lose all the jewelry as it is very distracting. Plus camera did not follow her movements smoothly. I would rather have it as a pattern rather than a video. That way I can take my time checking it out.
I’ve made my first block, did take a lil longer than 10 minutes, and yes video is not good quality. Had to watch several times to do first block. Of course, I’m not all that good at sewing anyways…
If you google 10 minute block it will show you other tutorials as well. The others may be easier to see how it’s put together. I watched several before attempting it.
I will definitely check this out. I’m still learning, well anything other than plain square block type quilts. I did make my daughter a bubble quilt for the baby. A lot of work went into that.
It was lovely. No distractions for me. I realize you weren’t professional photographers. Thanks for sharing keepinguns$#%&!@*ches.com – I will come back and watch again and shareit. Your quilt was a beauty.

You can find the directions on you tube it is so easy once you make the first full block you will have it. Just remember directional prints take some thinking about placement but can be done. Good luck and have fun!
Thanks Beverly! We have actually made this block, using different sizes! Thelma has become the Queen of this 3D Bowtie!! It was also one of our Old Fashion Day quilts! This is a great block to make!!

I must be slow! 10 minute block? took me at least 30. I’m giving up on any project that says how long it should take. my 40 minute jelly roll quilt took 3 hours. LOL
It’s not a REAL quilt unless its quilted all by hand pieced and quilted by hand that’s the way my grandmother did it. I used her quilting frames that hung in the ceiling
if its not a quilt what is it? i have sewed quilts by hand and machine and quilted by machine and by hand, sold and gave them as gifts and they were all called quilts ,they have worn blue ribbons and trophies at state and county fairs and not once has anyone ever told me my quilts were not a quilt .
I’m sorry but that is a foolish comment. How can it not be a quilt? Shouldn’t matter how it’s put together, by hand or machine. You’re sewing the pieces together to result in a quilt. If you check a dictionary it says layers & pieces of fabric sewn together to make a cover. Doesn’t say ‘By Hand’.
@[100000369353088:2048:Paula Davidson], I shared this video with some friends last week, and one of them is going to town on a quilt with this block. She is s$#%&!@*ching the center square like the cathedral window.
looks very dangerous to sew with the thread coming from large spool just beneath the hand wheel one flip of the thread and it’s around that hand wheel deluxe and money spent getting it fixed plus time down.
Hope I explain this so it’s understood. Cut a sq for the middle piece, about 4″or so. using half the size of the sq (2″sq) add about 1.5 inches 3.5″ foor the cornor blocks. Then sew as directed. Then the center piece is mor in proportion to the outside. Hope that makes sense
I agree a very easy quilt to make. I took a layer cake and had my granddaughter design her own by laying out in sets of five them took home and made for her. So much fun. Have made several.
I made two blocks, using 6 inch squares. Then turned them into a tote bag. Wanted to try it before I started on an actual quilt. Think I will do a baby quilt.
Not a great video. Go to YouTube and watch the creator of the 10 minute block…much better video and instructions with more ideas for the 10 minute block..also several books for the 10 minute block with many patterns
Use three of one color and 2 of another color for a 3-D Bow Tie. They are super easy and you can use any size square blocks to make this. 10″ is good but I love the 3 1/2″ blocks for the bowtie effect. Really easy to do and use up a lot of scraps!
A note to Carol: I noticed in the video that you have your spool of thread sitting on a tote cover. Joanne..s has a holder for this kind of thread for under 10.00. Both in plastic and metal..makes the spinning of the thread easier.. Just an FYI..you may already have one and chose not to use it…
They are called 10 minute blocks. You can google 10 minute blocks because there are several books available with many different patterns using the sane technique
I’m a rookie quilter. I love a challenge. This looks like fun and easy to do! I can’t wait to test this out with some of my stash! Thanks for the video! Very informative.
Possibly, but I think also they were in a room that had high ceilings and tile which echoes. Mine sounds that loud and horrible when we sew in the church fellowship hall.
I wonder who does the CC for these? This one has so many weird words? It makes no sense. If you are going to post a video with CC on it then I suggest that your preview it for mistakes. I sent a message to MSQC the other day about one of their videos CC words. Some of them were obscene!!
Brenda: I can’t believe you can be so rude as to point that out. So she may have made a slip of tongue, is that why you watched the video. I loved it no matter the slip.
Julie, I made two bow tie quilts using this technique when I lived in Va Beach but I believe that I started with 5 inch squares and two squares were background and two matched the piece in the middle.
Hi Joeanne,
Great question! If you decide to use a machine think about using an edge/joining foot to help you sew a perfect seam at the edge of each fold. This helps keep every seam the same. If You add a little glue to hold the fold in place before pressing the fold that may also help with either machine or hand sewing.
Thanks for question!
This message was for my sister only…who is now home…she is waiting for kidney transplant. She is an good artist and sand painter. Mainly encouraging her to start working with materials..didn’t think Keeping U N Stitches Quilting would think it was a foolish comment.
Sorry you took this so hard. My first comment was that it was interesting. Just wanted to give her a thought so she could get it fixed to use for many more years.
Bad video. Lady is obnoxious & video quality is very poor. Maybe written info better. Clean up your posts as there are other high quality quilting sites.
I really dislike it when you have to click and click and endure all the junk that comes with some links…. and you never get to the source you were looking for!!!!
Sewing is a great skill , one of many passions in my life.
But I never had all the beautiful, illustrations we have access
To today .Thank you for all the beautiful ideas Wow.
Suzanne McNeil started this block. If you YouTube her video, much faster and WAY more engaging. I did it and loved making them. This video shows how, but is hard to watch.
However there are lots of new quilters and to them this is a new pattern. And what a joy for a experience quilter to go to social media and share her knowledge.
This leads me to an advertising page for some sort of gaming devices and games. Why can’t it be easier to get the quilting info. when you try to pull up the site from the picture. They all seem that way I am getting tired of it. All the Quiling sites seem the same that way.
What comment? When she said quilt? Then corrected it to the top of the quilt? There is a distinction. A quilt is a finished product. The top is only a part of that product.
Many people denegrate machine quilting saying it is not authentic – both machine and hand pieced are still quilts. I am still working up the nerve to try machine piecing again. My last effort was a botched up mess.
Claiming any sort of responsibility for this block is rather tacky since Suzann McNeil has been making them and selling her books about the process and assorted variations for the past 5 years. If you are going to post something like this, at least give credit to the originator, not some pair of wannabes.
They use the uglest material for this demonstration and Im not sure that after all of that, I think it would be easier to just stitch the blocks together as you usally do.;
Most of my quilts are put together by machine and quilted by machine. Very seldom do I hand quilt. Would hate someone telling me that all my time and effort doing this is not quilting.
I have this book and have made one of the quilts in it. It was fast and fun. Sometimes as a quilter that’s what I need. The quilt turned out beautiful! Try it. Have some fun.
I think the question was asked if it could be done in a day. The response was no the finished quilt but the top. Some people can be so rude. Listen carefully before you comment.
I like the quilt…..but as a tutorial the camera work was awful. Camera and instructor made it very difficult to see what was happening. A beginning quilter would be completely lost.
This method looks even better when you use smaller squares. A small piece of fabric in the center under the part you turn down will give it a true cathedral window effect.
so annoying getting these posts on my FB – only thing attached is advertisement after advertisement after advertisement !!!! and not option to report as spam !
How many yards of fabric do you need for the 10 min blocks for quilting.
My husband says it’s cheaper to buy by the yard instead of pre cut. I’m new at this. I really want to try this tho. Can you send me a pattern?
Hummmmm…3-D Bow Tie block pattern. Have made several like this but seldom turn the edges of the center piece into the Cathedral window shape. I should do that more often.
quilt·ing
ˈkwiltiNG/Submit
noun
the making of quilts, especially as a craft or leisure activity.
work produced by quilting; quilted material.
the pattern of stitching used for quilting.
Im sorry , I have watched this a couple of times – it is much to complicated – and doesnt make sense, you could have them sewed together regular way in the time it would take me to figure all that out –
I have watched that several times –do you know how long it would take me to figure out that conglomeration??? I could have two put together the regular way , before that .
I believe that in the first step where she folds the light fabric square, she says “wrong sides together” but it looks like she’s folding it right sides together. ?
Question to quilting/sewing community;
Recommendations on sewing/quilting machines.
I’m an experienced sewing and am looking to buy new light weight machine. Just getting into quilting at a low level.
Not wanting to spend over $500., and want a no fuss dependable machine.
ANY ADVISE? ?
Gail Smith dont be such a snob! Women like your grandma would have sewn by machine if it was available back then. Quiltlng is a work of art and love whether by hand or machine!
I quilt by machine, pice by machine. Do some hand piecing and learning to hand quilt. But when you have arthritis so bad that it is hard to bend your fingers or hold a needle I am not giving up my machine just because someone tells me it is not true quilting. I think that the members of the two quilds I belong to would disagree also.
Gail, I love hand-quilting too, but…I made a goal to make a queen size quilt hope-chest quilt for each of my grandkids (all 21 of them, with more on the way). I still have 4 more to go. I’m not getting any younger, so they’ve been done all by machine. The grandkids and their parents love them, and I’m pretty sure they’re quilts.
I’m sorry, but this block reminds me of convenience food. Yes, the block is quick, but it wastes fabric in the name of speed and it looks like it was made in a hurry. It’s like convenience food – everything is right there, but the quality isn’t as good and you pay more for something that in the long run would be better if you “made from scratch”. I know it’s not easy to learn the skills to make a square in a square perfectly, but it’s like anything else – a little practice will gain you tremendous skill. (Isn’t that the same with cooking “real” food?)
I get tired of all these “quick” quilt blocks for beginners. Why isn’t there a really difficult block for those of us who want a challenge and not in 10 minutes? There needs to be more balance.
sorry but this is not a 10 minute quilt. why because you have to cut all the pieces, then sew them together and fold the middle it took me about 4 to 5 hrs. and i been quilting since 1991. Will maybe if some else did all the cutting for you.
Every quilter has their own speed. I;ve attended classes where some machines were whirling block out and some were like turtles so slow. It just depends on how experienced you are with your machine and have worked with it to see exactly what it will do. Good looking block.
no negative comment from me ………. loved it ….. i actually put it in play on a guilt i am making right now ………. took me two tries and one seam ripe out but once i got it whew it was way to easy thank you so much for this one …….. its one i will use again so easy and so fast ……loved it
I made a 10 Minute quilt for my youngest son and believe it was not 10 minutes! But this method – WOW!!! I love it!!! Thank you for sharing – now I want to make another one and use this method.
What a bunch of hateful, rude, but-picky comments. If you don’t like the block or the tutorial just move on and find one that you do like. Don’t trash someone else’s hard work and effort. Normally Quilters are the nicest people you would meet but they don’t seem to be on this thread.
This block is quick as it says but, when quilting, you have to deal with all those edges that aren’t stitched down. You can top stitch them down before assembling the top of course. Also, the sewing lady should drop the cone into a large mug to keep it under control if she doesn’t have a cone holder.
I read a lot of comments then watched the video. First, great going showing this done with a layer cake, no cutting! I’ve seen this done using charms. True the person holding the device needs more practice but I don think this was intended to be a professional video I believe it was meant to help some find a way of making cathedral Windows pattern easier.
Why does everything have to be about speed? I realize some people don’t have much time, but this world runs too fast. Sometimes we just need to slow down and enjoy the step by step process.

Sep 16. 2015

I would have liked to see how she finished off the fold of the cathedral window. By hand or machine?
keepnuinstitchesquilting
Nov 02. 2015
Hi Joeanne,
Great question! If you decide to use a machine think about using an edge/joining foot to help you sew a perfect seam at the edge of each fold. This helps keep every seam the same. If You add a little glue to hold the fold in place before pressing the fold that may also help with either machine or hand sewing.
Thanks for question!

Not a ten minute block! It’s a silly come-on. Don’t like the floppy look and who’s in that big a hurry, anyway? Quilting is a marathon, not a sprint!

Every quilter has their own speed. I;ve attended classes where some machines were whirling block out and some were like turtles so slow. It just depends on how experienced you are with your machine and have worked with it to see exactly what it will do. Good looking block.

What a bunch of hateful, rude, but-picky comments. If you don’t like the block or the tutorial just move on and find one that you do like. Don’t trash someone else’s hard work and effort. Normally Quilters are the nicest people you would meet but they don’t seem to be on this thread.

A banana tree will hold your big spool of thread while you sew. May have to put a hook in it so thread comes off even.

This block is quick as it says but, when quilting, you have to deal with all those edges that aren’t stitched down. You can top stitch them down before assembling the top of course. Also, the sewing lady should drop the cone into a large mug to keep it under control if she doesn’t have a cone holder.
Deborah Lord Mosley

I read a lot of comments then watched the video. First, great going showing this done with a layer cake, no cutting! I’ve seen this done using charms. True the person holding the device needs more practice but I don think this was intended to be a professional video I believe it was meant to help some find a way of making cathedral Windows pattern easier.

Why does everything have to be about speed? I realize some people don’t have much time, but this world runs too fast. Sometimes we just need to slow down and enjoy the step by step process.
