These Are Great Tips For Getting Better At Quilt Pressing

Quilts are made with fabric & fabric is designed to be flexible in 3 dimensions.

Making quilts using fabric that moves in 3 dimensions can be problematic. Everytime you handle, store, or sew the fabric it changes it’s form.

This is where the good old fabric iron comes to the rescue for us. But like with any tool, the user should know how to use it.

In the quilt making process one of our goals is to use different fabrics and arrange them into patterns & designs that are fun to make and look at.

This quilt making process of cutting fabric shapes and sewing them together to make interesting patterns is called quilt piecing. To help control the shape of these various shape cut fabric pieces we should start with a stable piece of fabric. That’s where the fabric iron comes in. This tool, when used correctly, adds some stability to the fabric.

Several methods can be used in conjunction with stabilizing your fabric, before, during and after quilt piecing to help keep your quilt pieces in the shape you need.

Notice, the term quilt pressing is used in quilt piecing and not ironing. The reason is this term is used is to remind you that we’re not ironing fabric to simply get the wrinkles out. We’re pressing our quilt fabric to stabilize it so it retains the shape we require to turn it into a quilt.

Pressing incorrectly can and does cause more problems by moving your fabric out of shape.

Pressing the correct way, helps keep everything lined up and fitting together as designed.

In the video on the next page, pay close attention to tips on how to treat our bias quilt piecing edges when we are quilt pressing. This single tip is worth watch the entire video.
