Self Quilting Denim Circles Rag Quilt! 5 Video’s & Place Matt!

SCROLL DOWN & FIND the Words, “Next Page” Highlighted in Larger Color Text to Watch the 1st of 5  Video Tutorials. Each Video is on its own “Next Page”

Denim Quilts are usually thought of as being rather sturdy.

This one is NO Exception!  It’s durable, EASY TO MAKE, and you can personalize it by fussy cutting a few fabric squares and embed them into the quilt.

This is a very simple and easy step that has to potential to create a strong emotional bond between the Quilt and its Owner.

Example is a piece of fabric from a favorite shirt, or pajamas, or a child’s baby blanket. You can use letters or numbers in squares to spell out a Name, Place, Thing, or use numbers for dates, like a birthday or other important milestone dates.

This quilt also has a softer side rag side.

The circle denim technique doesn’t apply just to Quilts. A Place Mat Tutorial is also included, and in a rustic setting like a cabin, it could also be a table runner.

The First Video should help you save time and create perfect Circles from your denim jeans.

A Second Video by Accucut provides details on stitching and assembly that some may find helpful. This Video presents the Rag Circle Quilt Place Mat.

The Third Video Shows YOU HOW TO MAKE A DENIM CIRCLE RAG QUILT

Two additional Videos 4 and 5, provide tips and guidance in cutting up jeans to make the circles of denim for this Rag Denim Quilt.

Making a quilt that looks complicated but is really simple isn’t unusual, but when it’s made with denim it does get a little more attention.

5 Videos get you started making this quilt the right way on the Next  Pages.

      Hi Linda
I believe she is using a 6 1/2 inch diameter circle with the 4 inch square of batting and 5 inch square of fabric for the top. I love this look and what a great way to reuse old jeans.

I made one similar to this. I zigzagged the edges so it doesn’t fray. I used up all kinds of old jeans even ones with stains or rips as long as they washed clean the color didn’t matter. I used an old CD disk for a template. worked rather well. It is not a warm quilt but more like a bedspread

      Hi Tunie,
I found a video I think that may help you. this video uses a pre cut circle that has hash marks for aligning the edges, I believe the hash marks are and inch in from the edges. a CD is 4 3/4 in diameter there for the square for then insert should be 3 3/4 inch square. and the batting although not necessary should be 1/2 inch smaller than the square making it 3 1/4 inch square. 3 inch square should work as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekIpUeAM-Cw

A picnic blanket… YES!! I hate to take my really good blankets or quilts out to lay on the ground. Too much stuff gets stuck in them and is hard to keep nice.

But a strong denim coverlet type blanket would be just perfect! And who does NOT have old demin jeans around? I like the flannel shirt idea.

I shop at a local Goodwill Store for fabric for costumes, etc. You can find all sorts of large pieces in skirts, men’s shirts (because they are bigger), bedspreads, drapery, table cloths, etc. Go on Senior Day for a good discount on top of their special tag color discount and it is quite economical.

Thanks for sharing this pattern with everyone! I LOVE the colors found in faded denim! 😀

    Reply to this comment
    • keepnuinstitchesquilting

      Mar 24. 2015

      Hi Penny,
The seam allowances for sewing the circles are more about the size of the circle and the center square size. if using a 6 inch circle then use a 5 inch square. To sew the side seams for attaching the circles together is about 1/2 inch at the widest point. if you are using a smaller center square your seam allowance will be deeper. When sewing the circle flap down to the top it is a 1/4 inch seam. Also it is a good idea to clip the edges of this 1/4 inch seam to just shy of the seam threads to help them fray better when it is washed, Be sure to check you dryer vent lint trap a few times while drying because all the loose threads can pug up the dryer vent quickly!
      Hope this answers your question.

I think it is a quilt not a comforter. It has 3 layers, one of which is batting. Depending on how you sew the center fabric into the circle it is also quilted. For example if you make an x to hold the batting and fabric in place, it is quilted. Interested in what others think about this.

The cathedral window version of this is very time consuming and heavy without any batting. No edges to fray, and a lot of hand work. Is beautiful.
This version w jeans looks heavy also. If made w/out batting looks like would still be warm.
I think I will try using old men’s ties for center.
Or already cut 5 inch squares. Then just figure the jean circle diameter to cover the square.

I used a Corelle bread plate for my denim circles, diameter 6 ¾ inches, then cut 5 ½ ” squares of coloured fabric and 4 ½ ” squares pre-washed flannel for the batting. Zig-zagged all edges so no fraying. Made a coverlet for a twin bed – 11 x 18 circles (about 1 row overhanging on each side only). It is very heavy so don’t think the flannel was necessary – still great though. Grandson loves it!
I have since bought a circle rotary cutter and am anxious to try it for the next quilt like this that I make! Should be a lot easier on the thumb!

Looks like cathedral windows and I haven’t worn jeans in about 30+ years. CRAZY HARD to find the right fit and I’ll be Damned to spend more than $20.00 for jeans. I remember buying jeans at “Jeans Galore” for $5.00, sitting in the bathtub with them on in hot water so that the 100% cotton would fit my body. Yeah, I’m old and not so stupid to buy torn up jeans when I can see a perfect pair myself

Think you could do this with lighter material, tacking a narrow turning on the edge of the circle, so that it could be s$#%&!@*ched down without a frayed edge. Wpuld look even more like cw.

What am I doing wrong? any hints on keeping these straight? I made my 6 1/2″ template myself and traced around each one.

Working on this quilt now. Very heavy. It is quilted…you quilt as you go when sewing down the flaps. Sewing 5 rows at a time, then sewing them together. I used 340 – 6 & 1/2″ denim circles for a full size quilt. Love the design and well worth the effort!

Well, to begin with, I quilted all the way through to the back but it just didn’t work for me. I don’t mean the denim circles, I stitched around every little animal. Just made the back look scrappy. The measurements needed to be bigger. The circles should have been at least ten inches instead if the seven. I think that was the measurements. Not recalling. Anyway the quilt is much too small even for s little dude. I sent it but I’m in the process of making a bigger quilt for this little boy. Hope to have it done by Christmas.
The original one will make a really cute wall hanging. Hope my daughter in law will do that. I have the pic on computer and if I knew what I was doing I would show you. Anyway, good luck with your quilt. I’d love to see it when your finished. The part that was most troublesome was the stitching thru to back. Not hard but just didn’t work well.
