Granny Square Quilt To The Scrap Pile Rescue

Thank you Lorna McMahon for the excellent layout.

Below your picture it shows how you laid out the Jelly Roll colors to make the strips that are cut for the Granny Square Block pieces.

As this is stitch together, keep in mind the light dark pattern.

That is of course only if you like your block to have symmetry. If that isn’t your goal and you prefer a patchwork quilt with a random patchwork layout then don’t worry about it.

Scroll further down to see how to lay out your strip sets before they are cut into units that form the Granny Square Quilt Block.

INDIVIDUAL SQUARES:

To make blocks using individual squares, you will need (12) 2.5″ background squares and  (13) 2.5″ squares for the rings.  Arrange the squares as shown.

Sew the squares into columns, as shown below.

Sew the columns together and press the seams toward the outside edges.

Trim the block square, leaving 1/4″ of background beyond the tips of the last ring of squares.

I saw this a few months ago and added it to my list of “want to make” quilts. A great way to use up scraps. I love to crochet “granny squares”– now I can “sew” them too.

I have some orphan pieces of this pattern from my great-grandmother, which I have not made into a quilt because I’m afraid the new fabric would tear the old fabric.

I sincerely hope that “them rows” is a typo and not a grammatical error.
