I understand that you always put the bottom of the ruler on the line of the previous line, but when you make your first triangle, how can you line up the bottom of the ruler with the bottom line? Wouldn’t you go over the same line again? Do I go past the original triangle a 1/4″ then line up the bottom of the ruler with the bottom line? Dang this is hard to explain what I’m thinking.

Hi, Heidi. I’m glad you liked my little video. To answer your question…when you finish your triangle, leave your needle in the down position and the finishing point. Then place the ruler against the foot with the END of the ruler on the first line that you stitched. If you notice, the ruler is not sitting on the line where your needle is, it is off of the line by 1/4″. Try it and you’ll see what I mean. I created this video as a fun exercise for folks just learning to use rulers.

This looks amazing, but for those of us with a standard sewing machine… how difficult is it going to be, to keep spinning a full sized quilt around?

    • Jeanne Harrison

      Sep 07. 2015

It is not necessary to spin the fabric to do this design. Since the quilt sandwich I was working on was so small, I just rotated it for the ease of filming the video.

The part of the video that shows the round foot is being stitched on a Baby Lock Tiara, a sit down mid arm machine. It is called the hopping foot.

If have tried to include both mid arm and domestic machines in this video as I made the video originally for our Facebook group Sit Down Free Motion Quilters.

I love this video and have tried it. LOVE IT! I have a Gammill Charm mid arm machine and it came with a straight line guide, but it’s 12″ long. I would like to find a 6″ guide like the one in your video, but can’t seem to locate one. My machine dealer can’t seem to be of any help either. Could you direct me to somewhere where I could get one. I’m not sure what to even call it. The one that came with the machine is a gam-guide jr. Thank you for any help you could give me.
